Grandpa unemployed in Indiana (retired). Walking in front of me taking huge steps hopping from one spot to another. That's queer I thought. As I had not seen grandpa act that way before. Maybe it is the great outdoors putting a hop in his step. He suddenly stopped and said in a quite voice. "Common over here boy". I struggled to make it over a rock as if a 7 year old mountain climber conquering Mount Olympus. As I approached his side he snickered quietly messing my bowl shape hair cut. Never quite got over that hair cut.
He said "those Musher's belong to the forest folk.
"Some say it is the Indiana unemployed living out cheer."
I looked down at my bucket with 10 or 15 Spear Head Mushrooms in it. Noticing the very large foot prints.

Now so many years later. I realise grandpa had been trying to match the stride of those prints. As my gaze came back up past grandpa. Not realising the importance of the moments. Blurting out loudly. "Hey grandpa look at the size of these"..."Shhh"!!! he said. Pointing in the direction I just came from. He Pulled his trusty Kodak Polaroid camera from it's pouch and began to take pictures.

The figure behind a fallen tree was very large & dark. It moved where it's head could be seen if you knew where to look. Grandpa took Cinnamon candy out of his pocket and took a step towards the patch of Mushrooms. The figure shook the fallen tree with one staunch shake. Grandpa said in soft voice. "Woe old man you stay right there". We are backing out fur yuh." Rather shaky and pale as he turned towards me. He said " we are moven on". "Slowly yuh hear". I knew better then to dis obey.
On a return visit to the area a year or so later. We found a Amethyst stone sitting right where grandpa placed the candy. You could feel we were not alone. He looked out into the woods and said " thank you old man". Grandpa pulled a net string bag from his shirt pocket and replaced the stone with it. As we walked away I notice the bag was full of Marbles. I knew it was a heartfelt gift to the figure grandpa called The Old Man. Grandpa collected Marbles and wouldn't part with them otherwise.
The Polaroids didn't show much. "I guess squatch blotch is the modern term". It's hard for me to imagine that some freakishly large man ( unemployed in Indiana) was parading around in the Indiana woods at dusk. Just to scare Mush room hunters.
When ever I look at that Amethyst on the entertainment center. Or hold it feeling the buzz. I go back to a Indiana woods. A simpler life and time when my grandpa was developing a re pore with his Old Man In the Woods.

I often think of all the honest Squatch investigators out there and wonder . Why none seem to use full spectrum cameras? I would like to say. If my grandpa would have had that technology back then mystery solved. "I know better though." He would not have revealed The old Man In The Indiana Woods.
